WHEN CRIMINAL JUSTICE IS JUST PLAIN CRIMINAL

On Tuesday, September 20, the Libertarian Party of DeKalb County will meet on the patio at The Famous Pub in the Toco Hills Shopping Center at 2947 N. Druid Hills Road (at LaVista Road). We will gather at 7:00 PM and the meeting starts at 7:30.

Join us for a discussion of the American criminal justice system focusing on the record-setting incarceration binge that has increased the number of Americans under correctional supervision from 2 Million in 1980 to 7 Million today. We would like to encourage a broad-ranging discussion including but not limited to the costs and benefits of the binge and the forces driving the numbers including the drug war, mandatory sentencing and the prison-industrial complex. We are using as a basic source guide the July 2011 special issue of Reason magazine, “Criminal Injustice, inside America’s national disgrace”. You can find the complete issue online at (http://reason.com/issues/july-2011), and we will reprint and hand out a few choice pages.

Also, if you have any libertarian-themed books or magazines, bring them for giving, trading or selling.

Electronics Cigarettes to be Banned Indoors in DeKalb

On June 14 the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners will be voting on legislation banning use of tobacco products in all public buildings in the county, including restaurants and bars. This is similar to legislation that the City of Decatur passed a couple years ago. However, DeKalb County’s legislation bans ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES which have no secondhand smoke because they are SMOKE-FREE !

Please call and e-mail your two county commissioners – your district commissioner and your at-large commissioner – to tell them that you are one of their constituents and to request that references to electronic cigarettes be eliminated from the ban, or better yet, that they be specifically exempted from the restrictions. Keep calling until you can actually speak with them. E-mail them supportive, authoritative, short links or articles. Also, we are looking for at least one person to actually go to the meeting at 9 AM on Tuesday the 14th, preferably “smoking” an e-cig, to show them and tell them that there is no harm to others and much less harm to yourself than smoking regular cigarettes.

Atlas Shrugged – Lively Discussion Tuesday the 17th

Last month, instead of our regular monthly meeting, we went TO SEE A MOVIE! I hope you got a chance to see Atlas Shrugged, Part 1, or have at least read the book. If not, come to the meeting Tuesday night and find out what all the fuss is about. We will be discussing the movie and the book.

We will be meeting again in the patio at the front of The Famous Pub, located at 2947 N Druid Hills Rd in the Toco Hills shopping center We gather at 7:00 PM, order food and drinks, group the tables and chairs around so we are comfortable, use the restrooms if needed, and greet friends and guests. The formal business meeting starts at 7:30 PM, but we try to keep that part short and to the point so we can get to the fun part. Hope you can make it!

Jerry Gonzalez of GALEO will tell us why Arizona-style legislation being proposed for Georgia right now would not work here, and what you can do to stop the madness.

Kirkwood musician Jonathan Paul will sing new lyrics to a popular Three Dog Night song.

As usual, we gather at 7:00 PM, socialize, use the rest room, find our seats, order drinks and food (with a 10% discount courtesy of the libertarian owner), and swap libertarian and Austrian-school economics books. Formal meeting starts at 7:30.

Our Chapter “Convention” Will Be Tuesday

One year has flown by and it’s time once again for our “convention”, which means we will elect or re-elect officers and make other decisions as to the direction of the chapter. We will gather at 7:00 PM at The Famous Pub patio (they’ve got it well lit and WARM finally!), order food and drinks (with a 10% discount), reintroduce ourselves to each other (how soon we forget), swap libertarian and Austrian-school economics books, use the rest room if needed, and settle into our seats in time to start the meeting at 7:30 PM.

The meeting will start with taking care of business old and new, including the nomination and election of officers for the next year (Chair, Vice Chair, and Secretary/Treasurer). Libertarians do not allow proxy votes, so you will definitely want to be there. Small changes could lead to big growth for the chapter!

After the business is taken care of, our Vice Chair, David Montané, will talk about “Doing the Math: Why Voting 3rd Party in General Elections Makes Your Vote COUNT”. Hope you can make it. Don’t forget to bring a good book to trade!

This month will be a SPEECH from our wonderful secretary/treasurer, Barbara Rickard! “Why Libertarians Oppose the ‘WAR ON DRUGS’ – and NO, it’s not because they think drugs are a good thing!” Please think of friends, family or neighbors who may want to come to this thought-provoking speech from an experienced Toastmasters speaker.

“Friends of DeKalb Schools”

That’s the new name of our education committee. This is a NON-PARTISAN committee formed by the Libertarian Party of DeKalb County currently focused on bringing transparency to our public school system. Our only goal at this time is to gently persuade the school board members to post the school system check register online. Our approach is to talk individually with each board member (or candidate) to let them know that this is being done by school districts all over the country (for instance the whole state of Alabama and the largest school district in the country – New York City), and has not been a problem or a hassle or a big expense, but instead shows the board’s commitment to transparency. When we have gotten a reading on the feelings of all the board members (and the candidates) on this action item, we will seek to get this on the agenda of a school board meeting.

An alternative approach which members of the committee can work on as desired is to advocate legislation at the state level to have all school districts throughout the state put their check registers online (including, of course, our county). This committee primarily works through e-mails and phone calls between the members, but whoever is able to meet once a month to catch up on the news and meet face-to-face is also welcome. August Meetings

“Citizens Auditing DeKalb Schools” (CADS) first meeting will be held on Tuesday August 3rd.

We had about a dozen people at both the June and July LP DeKalb meetings. At the June meeting, Michael Rothenburg, non-partisan candidate for DeKalb Superior Court Judge spoke. At the July meeting, Shane Bruce, Libertarian candidate for State Insurance Commissioner, and Allen Williamson, independent candidate for State Representative, District 82, both spoke.

The book swap is underway! Bring a libertarian book you’ve read to swap for one you have not read. At the June meeting, David swapped his copy of “Creature from Jekyll Island” with several random books from Barbara. At the July meeting, David swapped his copy of “Meltdown” for Doyle’s copy of “The Real Lincoln”. By the next meeting, others will certainly remember to bring books to swap.

We meet the 3rd Tuesday of each month at The Famous Pub in the Toco Hill Shopping Center. Meeting starts at 7 pm. 10% discount on food and drinks courtesy of the libertarian owner. At our next meeting on August 17, we will start meeting in the big hall at the rear of the pub.
