August Meetup for the Libertarian Party of Dekalb County: Left and Right Outreach: “Damn Kids These Days!” Edition

Nick Cooper

As the government continues to spend hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars every hour while encroaching on our civil liberties, more and more people are getting turned off by the traditional political party labels. Increasingly, a younger generation of “millennial” voters refuse to identify as either Republicans or Democrats and consider themselves independents. We must reach out to this cohort of voters since they are fed up with the two-party system and are looking for alternatives. It’s time to bring the message of liberty to a new generation!

Our distinguished speaker is Nick Cooper, President of the Atlanta Chapter of America’s Future Foundation and a dedicated supporter of human freedom.

April Meetup for the Libertarian Party of Dekalb County: GeorgiaCarry.Org on Georgia’s HB 60

The Libertarian Party of Dekalb County is inviting all to our April Meetup! We will enjoy some fun social time and then be graced with guest speaker Jerry Henry from GeorgiaCarry.Org. This presentation is sure to generate excitement about current gun rights legislation that will affect you and your family!

HB 60 would allow greater freedoms to carry weapons in a variety of places. Here is the link to the legislation, for those who want to read it: http://www.legis.ga.gov/legislation/en-US/display/20132014/HB/60

HB 60 was agreed to and passed (112-58) in the House and has went to the governor’s desk for his signature. This bill will clear the way for some great gun rights improvements in the future. As of this writing, the governor still has to sign the bill into legislation and then we wait until July 1st for the bill to go into effect. It is widely expected that Governor Deal will sign the bill as he has always stated that he will sign any pro-second-amendment bill that reaches his desk, and this fits that definition. This is also a promise he has on his reelection website.

Join us on April 15th to hear more about this exciting (and “controversial”) bill from Jerry Henry at GeorgiaCarry.Org. Mr. Henry will share information about the bill and then we will have some Q&A.

Date: April 15th, 2014

Q&A Time: 8:00pm – 8:15pm

The Libertarian Party of Dekalb County is inviting all to our March Meetup! We will enjoy some fun social time and then be graced with guest speakers David Guldenschuh and Jacqueline Peterson from the Convention of States (COS) Project. This presentation is sure to generate excitement and provide an opportunity for all to get involved with a monumental, HISTORICAL event of the century!

The Convention of States Project is a US Constitution Article V call for an Amending Convention for the following purposes:  to rein in the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, to impose fiscal restraints upon the federal government and to impose term limits upon federal officials.  We have currently passed our Resolution throughout both the GA Senate (SR736) and the GA House (HR1215) – we expect that the Senate Resolution will pass the GA House this week.  When this happens, Georgia will be the first State in the Nation to have passed it.  There are 13 other States that are also working the COS Resolution through their respective Houses.  We expect there to be a total of 13 – 15 States to pass it this year, with the remaining 19 in 2015 and the actual Convention to be held in 2016.

When attending our meeting, please encourage Anthony’s to invite us back by purchasing food and drinks! There will be a 20% gratuity automatically added to your bill, in exchange for letting us use the space without charge – which is a fantastic deal! We encourage you to purchase food and drinks to support us being able to use this facility, but it is not mandatory in order to attend this exciting meetup!

Traffic, Transit, and Transportation Taxes

At our monthly meeting  this Tuesday night (the 19th), Transportation Leadership Coalition organizer Bob Jackson will speak out against the T-SPLOST, and will bring the “NO T-SPLOST!” yard signs that we ordered (minimum $4 reimbursement donation per sign requested).  After we hear what Bob has to say, we will spontaneously erupt into a discussion about traffic congestion, HOT lanes, MARTA buses, trains and light rail, taxis, gasoline taxes and sales taxes in the Atlanta area, and will reflect on how government has gotten us into this mess, how privatizing roads and highways would relieve congestion, and steps we as libertarians can take to help foster a free market for transportation in the area.

Since this meeting is about a 10-county regional election, and in fact statewide, this meeting is open to all, whether you live in DeKalb county or not.

As usual, we will meet at The Famous Pub in the Toco Hills Shopping Center at North Druid Hills Road and LaVista Road, from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M.  Hope you can make it!

In the Shadow of the CDC

At our March meeting we discovered that we have in our midst a retired medical doctor who worked for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), on the Tuskegee Syphilis Study.  This year is the 40-year anniversary of that 40-year study, which monitored the health of 399 poor, black men but FAILED TO TELL THEM they had syphilis!  15 years into the study, when penicillin had become standard treatment for syphilis, they also failed to treat them with penicillin!

For our meeting next Tuesday (the 15th), Don W. Printz, M.D. will speak on his experience with those “in the shadow of the CDC” during the dismantling of the project.  We would like to use this topic as an opportunity to reach out to the black residents of DeKalb and together uncover other instances, both past and present, in which government mistreats poor and minorities.  We will meet “in the shadow of the CDC”, at The Famous Pub in the Toco Hills Shopping Center, at 7:00 PM.
